Thomas was educated at Bennington College, where he received his B.A. in painting and photography. He received his M.A. from Columbia University and M.F.A. from Pratt Institute. Originally, Thomas was trained in Western style realism. His recent paintings reflect a mixture of realism and impressionism. His photographs, on the other hand, show an influence from pictorialism and romanticism. He draws inspiration from literature and music and works from both observations and imagination. He has exhibited his work in New York, Boston, and Chicago. His work has also been featured in Manhattan Arts magazine and Best of Photography Annual, published by Photographer’s Forum magazine.
